The emphasis will be on the FUNdamental movement and balls skills

that form part of the National Curriculum

Orange ball mini tennis is for players aged 8 and 9 years. Players can be new to the game or have progressed through Mini Red.  It is played on slightly larger courts than red ball, but not yet the full tennis court.  The nets are lowered to suit the court also.  The children use bigger rackets (about 58cm – 63 cm (23” – 25”)) and balls that are not as soft as red balls. Sessions will cover basic coordination and movement, racket and ball skills, basic strokes, tactics and getting players to rally, serve and score.  It’s the next stage to go through before you start playing on a full sized court and it will help players develop all the different shots, providing fun competition.  Orange Mini Tennis is divided into 3 levels - beginners in Level 3 or those who have competed Red Mini Tennis.  Levels 2 & 1 are for players who have already moved through Orange Level 3. Mini Tennis Orange players should be competing in Orange tournaments and events at the appropriate level.

Red ball mini tennis is for players aged 8 years and under. It is played on smaller courts with a lower net.  The children use smaller rackets, around 43-58cm (17-23”) and softer balls (sponge indoors and felt outdoors).  It’s just like the real thing and will give children the chance to have long rallies and play different types of shots, which should be lots of fun.  The emphasis is again on having lots of FUN with the FUNdamental movement and ball skills forming the bulk of the session.  Children are introduced to the basic strokes and techniques of the game, and will start to learn basic tactics and how to score.  Red Mini Tennis is divided into three levels – beginners in Level 3 moving through Levels 2 &1, for players who have advanced their skills and moved through level 3.

Mini Tennis Red 3 players should be competing in Red Level 3 and 4 tournaments and Red festival days and Mini Tennis Red 1/2 players should be competing in Level 1 & 2 tournaments and Red festival days.

Green ball mini tennis is for children aged 10 years and over.  Players can be new to the game or have progressed through Mini Red and Orange.  Green balls are used which are slightly softer than normal but players are now playing on the full size court.  Sessions will build on Mini Orange and cover basic co-ordination and movement, racket and ball skills, basic strokes, tactics and getting players to rally, serve and score. A games based approach will be used to improve the player’s technical, tactical, physical and mental understanding of the game.  The emphasis is still very much on fun and skill learning.  There are 3 levels in Mini Green: Level 3 for beginners and those graduating from Mini Orange and Levels 2 and 1 for players who have moved through previous Green Levels.   Players in Green should be competing in LTA Green Events at the appropriate level.
